Oh my gosh this was so painfully slow. Like it could’ve easily cut at least 200 pages. Omg. It’s so gosh darn repetitive. A character says something. Than repeats it a few times to get the message across. Than another character says it. Than POVs are switched and we hear about it like 4 more times. This was painful and I’m not reading the next one. Idk how I finished this. 2.5 stars. It not great. Rounded down.

The words don’t hit right. My body feels cold, my mind racing to piece this together. This man looks like Julian, but he is not Julian.
“How do you know my name?” My voice wavers, and I feel a deep, sinking dread settle in my gut.
My eyes dart between him and the alley entrance. I can’t get past him. I’m trapped.

My heart pounds in my chest, and a small, wicked grin spreads across my face at seeing the Devil at play.
“I’m sorry, Maeve,” Caspian says. His eyes are wide now, darting between Lucifer and I as he works something out in his mind. “I hope that one day it all becomes clear.”

“Maeve has a tendency to fire anyone I hire, and she’s had a rough go of it.”
I laugh. That’s the kind of behaviour I can get behind. “Bested by a pretty and pampered princess.”
“Oh, trust me,” Atticus says dryly. “Maeve’s more than just her looks.”
I’ll believe it when I see it.

I don’t know what kind of shifter he is. Mythical for sure, the energy is there and can’t be ignored. But past that, I can’t say.
He’s clearly been in the pride long enough that he doesn’t need the security detail, but something about him makes me think that he’s his own security.

“Alpha Phoenix,” Orson says, stepping in behind me, gently closing the door. My heart races as his shadow appears just in front of me. I know he’s not close, but I can still feel his touch searing into my skin.
“Are you okay?” Atticus’s and Orson’s mate asks, her voice soft and gentle, as the concern pours off of her.

He sighs, some of his fight draining out of him. “Don’t be like this, Maeve. We can reassess and make a new plan, but this quick and hasty—”
“There’s that word again. Hasty? It’s been a planned leave for a couple of weeks now, Adrian, and it includes a trial period. It’s not a hasty decision that I’ve not thought out.”
Does he really think I’m that stupid?

I grab the letter opener, and it takes a few tries before I manage to calm the trembling enough to open it properly. Unlike the dark red on the envelope, the writing on the paper is a bright red, and it has a strange odour to it. Powerful, but odd.
Just like the outside, the script is elegant and pretty. It’s a shame the contents are so psychotic.

“Maeve, this is—” Glenda starts, and her voice is in that fake tone she uses when she’s trying to be pleasant. It’s sickly sweet and laced with sugar, as if we can’t smell her treacherous energy from a mile-off.
“My mate,” the man cuts off, his wide eyes filled with a mix of awe and uncertainty.
