Shayma, the strongest aunt they could ever have, tried to save them until the very last minute. She didn’t know exactly what she would do, but she was certain she would do something for her girls—whom she fought fiercely to protect—even though, in the end, she still failed.

The story was written perfectly. The fact that Abdulkhaleq knew Rahimah was a bashaboosh from the beginning was shocking, yet he still liked her and probably saw her every day playing with the kids. That part is unsettling, especially since he had been seeing her since she was underage. It makes me question his character and suggests that his personality isn’t very pleasant.

The characters are ambitious about having a better life than the one they were born into. They are true examples of heroines for other girls who are reading. Life can be changed for the better if you try. Allah is with you, and He knows your struggles. When the options were getting smaller for Shakibah, Allah opened a new door for her—one that I assume the king or the colonel would help her through.

A strong start to the book, with vivid and unmistakable caricatures.
