Anna Pavlovna appears to be the consummate imperial socialite. That she is not only aware of but has some understanding of the particulars of Napoleon’s conquests is the very first thing we learn in the book. Vasily, for his part, appears to be equally adept at social navigation, but with none of the authenticity that Anna manages to at least present.
