"Reading in the dark?" he said. "With the lights out? When you're supposed to be asleep?"
I fumed. Not because Uncle Gabriel was wrong--'course he wasn't--but because I felt like I was being punished for something I had no control over. Once you start reading a book, how the hell are you supposed to stop? The way I figure, you're only allowed to stop if there aren't any mermaids.

If Sky could love Mary, I decided, then I could love Paul. Because when you love somebody--and I loved Sky--you gotta be willing to do things for them you never would have seen yourself doing in a million years. If you love somebody, you have to love them with your actions, not your thoughts. I wanted to love everything Sky loved. If Sky loved it, it was good.
