Ch. 20 Time is different in the Land of the Lost. An hour in Living is a day in Lost. Jack is cold and wet. They move across the wasteland and night begins to fall. They continue to follow the scissors. They must follow orders. They are in the wastes of the unlamented. Surplus, the unloved, and the unwanted live here. DP can’t be there. CP worries what will happen if they discover twins. Jack says they are not alike.

It took effort to get out of the bin. They hear the mayor announce that the lawbreakers are in town. Everyone must lock their doors. The mayor tells one group to search east and the other, west. The crusher moves away. Once all is quiet, they move toward the train station and are disappointed that it is gone. Then from behind them they hear the crusher’s voice.

CP and Jack stay put in the bin, which is a tight fit. How long before they are caught? They worry about being turned in. They overhear the mayor and capture team make plans. CP tells Jack about a hob-nailed book named crusher whose allowed to crush whatever is in his path. They hear it stomp. They surmise that DP is in the third town hinted at by the gold watch. They decide to sneak on the train after sunset.

The last mayor Pinking Shears had broken the law by hiding some surplus in the attics because she felt sorry for them. The Loser raized the town and ate all the surplus plus a couple of innocent bystanders who were in the way. He hauled Pinking Shears off to his lair and she’s never been seen again. Cheesegrater enforces the law so it doesn’t happen again. He declares martial law. Addie will sort newcomers.

Ch. 27 Mayor Cheesegrater responds. While everyone listens, CP hauls Jack toward a dark alley and they jump inside a clean and empty dustbin (better than the lunchbox). The mayor explains that breaking the law gives the Loser an excuse to break more laws. He states that ten years ago to this night (in the fullness of time?) the Loser came crashing into town, kicking its doors. The mayor isn’t letting it happen again.

She does not want anything unworthy to pollute the shades of Bother It’s Gone. Jack now knows DP is here. One pleasant voice speaks up from behind Jack. It’s Poem who is worthy and special but Addie hates her. Addie is useful and Poem is not. Addie warns everyone to avoid Poem who is mad (of course). She’s been trying to get Poem kicked out. They are interested by adjustors with a description of Jack and DP. Yikes!

She explains that there are two towns in Mislaid: Disposable and Bother It’s Gone. The gold watch tries to correct her but she shuts him down. I would think a gold watch would speak truth. LOL The tour slams to a stop. She claims there are two towns: one for the good things and one for the bad. OUCH! JKR just step on the toes of moderns! Disposable is bad and Bother It’s Gone is special, valued, and important.

They strike up a conversation with a newly arrived gold watch who was given to his owner Bob by his wife. They broke up and Bob lost the watch and doesn’t seem to miss it. Addie hushes them because she’s such a control freak (a bit like Lady Catherine de Bourgh). She points out her house (Swiss chalet) and the home of her neighbor (Silver Bookmark). It’s so important to have well-bred neighbors. See what I mean?

Addie’s full name is Address Book but insists on being called Addie. She’s giving a tour to the newcomers and they follow her because they think she’s an official. She’s not even wearing a black hat. CP and Jack go on the tour because they don’t trust her and they want to know why. Plus she might explain why so few toys are there. She gives the tour as a personal friend of the mayer and to make them feel at home.

Ch. 26 They wonder why there are so few toys. They hear a train whistle from a royal blue and gold train that brings things made of precious medals (gold, silver, bronze). Addie the address book announces in a bright, stuck-up voice that she is giving a tour of Bother It’s Gone. Oh, bother!
Wait. She uses the word trotter for the pig’s hoof. Originally, Strider’s name was Trotter. It also rhymes with Potter.
