A Stroke of Good Fortune; this was probably my favorite story in here so far, diving into her psyche as she sits in denial over a baby she doesn’t want; particularly coming up with delusional answers to her ‘ailment’ before accepting reality. it’s stakes so small making it feel incredibly authentic and abstract, the fear of children and aging, it’s really beautiful

just finished ‘A Good Man is Hard to Find’ and really feel the pressure of that final conversation in my bones. this is my first dive into southern gothic and i appreciate its incredibly religious tones intertwined with its focus on the history of slavery. i one time stayed in a plantation that was turned into an AIRBNB, that erasure and white commodification of history just reminded me of this book
