ch2! y’know, the book gives us a heads up about the incest in the first chapter and i *still* got caught off guard by Desdemona and Lefty!
i’m loving the omniscient narration so far, and there’s a moment where Des and Lefty are compared to a creature with four legs and two heads, probably referring to the ancient humans before Zeus split them into Male and Female

ch3! Lefty and Desdemona escape to france (with a third, claiming him to be their cousin). we follow dr. Philobosian for a lot of the chapter, ending in a tragic, truly horrible encounter with the aftermath of the Turks’ violence. it ends with the description of how the US reacted to the horrible fire and attack; which is to say, their UNDERreaction. nothing changes!

dipping my toes in the book with the first chapter; ‘middlesex’ isn’t just already well written but also a good companion piece to ‘the odyssey’. ‘middlesex’ feels quietly mythological, as if the gods above still tamper with the mortals’ conflicts. visions, magic, curses, incest; it’s all there! not to mention, tiresias and homer both get mentioned. nice!
