A monolith appears near the apes cave, mysterious and unknown to the apes. They become entranced by it, being controlled to perform actions that were otherwise foreign to them. They are being assisted in evolving into complex intelligent veins by unknown forces. They mention hearing drums and metal for the first time on planet earth. Crazy to imagine.

Chapter one sets scene in a pre-historic african desert. Apes struggle to survive in a harsh hunter gather lifestyle fending off other ape tribes and hunters of the night. Moon-watcher, the leader is becoming more and more aware, and is slowly becoming more sentient.
