I found a copy of this on our Nile river cruise ship, on the way from Edna to Aswan. Great company.

The more I get into the book, the more Fiennes’ interruptions with his experience in Oman seem intrusive—drawing attention away from his subject to himself comes off as somewhat narcissistic, particularly when the intrusions are more forced and not so natural.

I am enjoying the book most when Fiennes concentrates on Lawrence. The weaving of his own experiences in Oman is less successful — often it seems stretched and self-congratulatory. Oh well. Thankfully, it is hard to mar the strength of Lawrence and Feisal as subjects of this military and historical, and to some extent social, biography.
