Ch. 10:
Kelsey, Crome, Hastings, and Poirot visit Mr. and Mrs. Barnard. Betty’s boyfriend: Donal Fraser. Her sister Megan arrives home (Hastings describes her as modern looking magnetic but not unattractive). Poirot comments that there is “great charity” given to the dead, and only someone who does not know Betty is dead will tell him the truth. To this Megan responds “Betty was an unmitigated little ass!”

“Crome was a very different type of officer from Japp. A much younger man, he was the silent, superior type. Well educated and well read, he was, for my taste, several shades too pleased with himself.” 😂

Ch. 8:
Hastings & Poirot discuss the murder on a train. Poirot says the murderer purposefully left ABC/wiped it down for fingerprints. They discuss the murder being a local, from outside Andover, a woman, or man; all equally as likely. A second ABC letter is received, stating another murder will take place at Bexhill on the 25th. Another meeting is called. Hastings suggests the next victim will have a B surname.

Chapter 7 summary:
Interview Mr. Partridge, a regular. Visited ~2/week; last visit at 5:30pm, victim seemed normal. Doesn’t know about victim’s personal life; came forward to police of his own accord; owns an ABC currently in his possession. Mr. Bert Riddell is belligerent, didn’t go to police of his own free will, claims not to have seen body behind counter. Didn’t touch the ABC on the counter.

Three/four dark-haired men and one light-haired clean shaven man was seen coming/going; murder occurred at a high traffic time. They visit the next door neighbor, Mrs. Fowler, she believes Mr. Ascher is responsible, but never heard anything (5 pounds).

“You yourself are English and yet you do not seem to appreciate the quality of the English reaction to a direct question. It is invariably one of suspicion and the natural result is reticence. If I had asked those people for information they would have shut up like oysters.”
