okay so apparently they just inject blood into themselves as a normal part of their morning routine and I have questions again. is this whole blood (in which case, Very Bad Idea for her to use B+ blood as an AB) or packed RBC? if the latter, what happens to the platelets/plasma? also with such regular transfusions are they doing a full phenotypic march or are these people just always suffering mass transfusion rxns??

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, it is possible for AB+ to get the “wrong blood”. If Willis is as trained as she claims, she should definitely know this

don’t like the word “substance” in the definition for antigen, but otherwise a good definition. it does leave out that the more one is exposed to outside blood, the more that less immunoreactive antigens matter as your body develops antibodies to foreign antigens, something that seems relevant in this world

like okay I get there’s a twist coming and all this blood isn’t actually going back to the people, but one would infer that if every citizen is required to give blood, then you’d have sufficient blood to give to each blood type. You shouldn’t need to mix types? AB+ would be just as vital as O- because you’d only want to give AB+ their own type. Too hard to type out w a character limit but make sense?

okay props for the apheresis explanation but this confirms they’re using whole blood for everything. Which ???? Okay I’m really out of my depth here, but from my understanding, this would mean there’s risk in taking blood from outside your blood type except in cases of extreme trauma (which we use O+ for already). So then AB+ is needed to give to other AB+. Like it’s a self sustaining loop is it not???

this explanation about AB blood (as in red cells) being functionally useless is correct meaning if you have AB blood, please don’t donate whole blood. we throw so much AB blood away. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE donate plasma if you can though. AB+ is the universal plasma donor (O- being the universal plasma recipient)

I don’t think that’s a thing?????? Unless I completely misunderstood high school biology??????? Wtf is an O antigen and how have A/B/AB people not developed Anti-O if it exists????? someone tell me I’m wrong??????????????????????????????

congrats on not tripping up on “O+ is compatible with ~85% of the population” (most people say ~85% of the population is O+ when actually it’s around 35% iirc. ~85% of the population is Rh positive, thus compatible with O+)

okay at the beginning of this chapter they give a correct definition of phenotype as it relates to blood, even if it’s not as specific with examples as I would’ve liked
