I guess I'm just not into obsessive neurotics? Also I think Thomas Mann's Buddenbrooks has much more incisive commentary on class divisions (similarly Anthony Powell is much more clear eyed about the aristocracy in Dance to the Music of Time). ***1/4 so far, hopefully it gets better.
