Whelp, I’m hooked. I am deeeply envious of Grann’s ability to take details and weave them into such a compelling story! Byron climbing the mast had my heart pounding and I nearly cried at the description of a sailer’s funeral-at-sea. Also, I’m astounded by all these phrases in contemporary use that have roots in sea life (e.g. “under the weather”)!

Excited to finally start the book I received at a Thanksgiving-time book swap—and was happy to get because it’d very recently been recommended to me! Curious to see if it feels more like historical fiction or like reading “Team of Rivals” (so far it’s the latter).
