Sometimes

Sheenagh Pugh
(December 20th 1950 — )

...but it isn't anywhere near skilful or subtle enough and I would cheerfully disown it, if people didn't now and then write to me saying it had helped them. I originally wrote "the sun will sometimes melt a field of snow" (the sportsman's drug of choice was cocaine), but I mistyped "sorrow" for "snow" and then decided I like that better.

... That same day, Tennyson wrote to his lifelong friend Francis Turner Palgrave, editor of the famous Victorian poetry anthology The Golden Treasury: "What a season! The wind is roaring here like thunder, and all my ilexes; rolling and whitening. Indeed, we have had whole weeks of wind."

The Pebble Who Has No Toes

...

But before he touched the shore
The shore of the Bristol Channel,
A sea-green Porpoise carried away
His wrapper of scarlet flannel.
And when he came to observe his feet
Formerly garnished with toes so neat
His face at once became forlorn
On perceiving that all his toes were gone!

Kay Boyle
February 19th 1902 — December 27th 1992)

...She was a committed social activist as much as a writer, and believed above all that "the writer must recognize and must accept his commitment to his times." Her poetry and short stories bear witness to the injustices she observed.

The Ballad of Bouillabaisse

...

I wonder if the house still there is?
Yes, here the lamp is, as before;
The smiling red-cheeked écaillére is
Still opening oysters at the door.
Is Terré still alive and able?
I recollect his droll grimace;
He'd come and smile before your table,
And hope you liked your Bouillabaisse?"

From A Christmas. Carol

...

What. can I give Him,
Poor as I am?
if I were a shepherd
I would bring a lamb,
If I were a Wise Man
I would do my part, —
But what I can I give Him,
Give my heart,

Out in the Dark

Edward Thomas
(March 3rd 1878 — April 9th 1917)

...
After his death, Edward Thomas' wife Helen wrote in a farewell to him:"Beloved, there have been many weeks and now I have come to today. The way has been very difficult for me, but even through darkness and despair and just nothingness and fear, just as ever when these things came before, all has been well at last because of our love."
