Last month I watched the Nicholas Ray adaptation with Humphrey Bogart. I didn’t like it very much tbh, so I’m very interested to see what the book will be like.

Much better than the movie, as books always are. (I’m just kidding, although it is better than the movie.)

i haven’t seen the movie adaptation but my recollection is that this novel is all about the interior. at minimum, i anticipate you’ll find it varies greatly from the movie. I found it intriguing and like Hughes’ writing. I’ll be interested to see what you think of it.

Thanks, Carol. I read a lot of reviews after finishing the movie and apparently it’s a completely different story with the same names. In the movie Dix is a screenwriter—who, funnily enough, at the start of the movie, talks openly about how he doesn’t intend to read the book he’s adapting. And he’s not a killer. Just a guy with a fiery temper.
