Just finished the Cleopatra chapter… YEESH…
Lucy Snowe has some internalised misogyny to work through… it was unpleasant to read her insecurities also expressed through racist statements though it is true that racists are the most insecure people in existence…. So… accurate then?

Am I enjoying this? Yes. Am I struggling? Yes. The text is not only dense, but Lucy Snowe is miserable though not in an uncaptivating way. It’s a chapter a day kind of book…

How does one already have so many thoughts only a fraction of the way into a 500 page novel? There is a fever dream-esque quality to the atmosphere; 40 pages spent building up the characters of Pauline and Graham, only to be disposed of almost immediately. I wonder if any symbolism will make itself known in time. Lucy Snowe: what is she truly hiding from the reader!! An unreliable narrator I believe her to be!

What a strange way to begin a book - right into action, very little information about our narrator but rather, her observations of the world around her. Does Miss Lucy Snow remain a fly on the wall for the rest of the book, or does she break out of this construct in time….
