Gender bias isn’t erased by competence alone.
It is conditionally suspended—if women also conform to expectations of warmth. Communal behavior seems to count in a woman’s favor only if it can be attributed to stable traits of character, of her own authentic nature.

Gender bias creates a double bind for women in leadership and electoral politics. When women’s competence is ambiguous, they are systematically judged as less competent than men. But when women’s competence is clearly established, they are penalized on likability, being perceived as hostile, abrasive, or untrustworthy. Men do not face this tradeoff.
