Another entry in the genre of books that are ostensibly works of natural history but are really explorations of the author’s grief and/or trauma coupled with an obsession over a dead writer’s life and ideas. A good bit better than ‘Fish Don’t Exist’ but didn’t land as well as Philip Hoare’s ‘The Whale.’ MacDonald’s prose is lovely, I prefer when they’re more focused on the hawks themselves.
