I’ve just finished the interlude and I genuinely believe that the period in his life between Giovanni’s Room and his voyage to the south, Baldwin was strengthening the voice I’d come to hold in high esteem fifty years later. His introduction to the south, understanding his role as a writer, and his ability to set aside his naivety at domestic life are beautifully and tangibly written by Boggs. Incredible!

It’s illuminating to read what Baldwin lived through in order to complete Go Tell It on the Mountain and Giovanni’s Room. His struggles, his self doubt, depression all hidden layers that I’d never knew existed for the Author I consider a muse. Reading so far has given me a sense of calm for my own writing struggles. Can’t wait to read the Interlude.

I enjoyed the prologue and Book One on Baldwin’s earlier life. It’s amazing to see how much his personal life shaped the character development for Go Tell It on a Mountain and Giovanni’s Room. He kept his fiction personal and honest. The first part of this biography has been eye opening as a fan. It’s not necessarily an easy read but, this has shaped a broader understanding of his candor and brilliance.
