Sometimes I feel like Henry James assumes that the reader will read between the lines and figure out all that isn't being said and all of some real significance that is getting talked about by the characters in code and as a reader I am just trying to make head and tails of it all. He does then give a clearer picture but the meandering can be too much at times. But I am still liking the book.

I do find myself sometimes bewildered by the flow of dialogue but it's interesting as well.
Also certain descriptions are just beautifully done.

The chapters uptill now have a melancholy feel to them.

My first ever novel by Henry James and I admit I was a bit unsure of what was happening as I begun with the novel because it feels like you have landed in the middle of the story rather than the beginning. But I read someone say that HJ likes to set the theme of the novel first so I am trusting the process. So far I am intrigued.
