The Widow leans heavily into character backstory and atmosphere early on. Grisham spends a lot of time establishing who people are, how they’re connected, and the emotional weight of their pasts before the plot truly accelerates. That can absolutely feel like slow forward motion if you’re expecting courtroom tension or fast-moving intrigue right out of the gate.
