‘While Kiri deals with the sniffles I’d like to get back to business. We’re all getting some well-deserved time off in Sydney but for Ben’s benefit as a first timer I should point out that the workload when we leave port may get even harder.’ He turns to me. ‘Ben, how do you think our charming crew may behave when they are let loose on the streets of Sydney for an overnight visit?

The one benefit to being old is that you no longer worry about what other people think. Nor do you worry about convention. That allows me to do what I think is right.

Well that lady was a first rate b*tch.. sad but not surprising I could see my sister-in-law doing this 😕.
I'll be surprised if those two stayed together long term.
I would have waived with one finger too 👋 good riddance.

Men who have lived through the darkest of nights do not give in when better days dawn. I’ve seen countless patients beat the odds when something really matters to them. A daughter’s wedding.A son’s graduation. A grandchild’s first day at school. Now, here, a mark of respect to fallen comrades. Medicine is full of extraordinary stories. This Mr Baxter has vowed to travel to Singapore. Our job is to help him do just that.

It seems that way above us in one of the passenger restaurants a guest with a strawberry allergy has decided she likes the look of the strawberry gateau. I get the call two minutes after her head hits the carpet.

It only takes one person to say they feel green for ten more to persuade themselves they feel the same. The first day of a big crossing is busy even if the water is as calm as a mill pond. Once the rains come and the skies get dark we get even more people who want treatment just in case. Edward will see all the passengers but as usual he'll pass some over to you if he's overwhelmed.

Romeo is arranging some fresh flowers when I get to the clinic and the day’s papers are already fanned out on our coffee table. ‘So how did yesterday afternoon go?’ I ask Eileen when I poke my head around her door to say hello.
She looks at a sheet of paper on her desk. ‘Sleepy little Madeira brought us three sprained ankles, a badly grazed forearm, two cut foreheads,

Then, of course, come the guests.’ Edward turns to me again. ‘Sydney is a world class city where everyone eats well, speaks English and drives on the left. I can see why you might ask what can possibly go wrong. Perhaps Eileen can recall a few incidents from our last trip down under?’ ‘We had a very embarrassed gentleman who fell over and broke his nose when something scared him at the zoo. There was that lady who got a box jelly fish sting on her legs. I seem to remember that someone on the beach told her to put vinegar on it but the nearest shop was a gourmet food store that only sold balsamic. Her husband refused to pay the extra and they ended up having such a big row she had an asthma attack. Then there was the crew member who caught a particularly nasty sexually transmitted infection. It didn’t affect us down here, but last time I was in Sydney we also had some no-shows when we sailed. One married man and one married woman failed to rejoin the ship. Interestingly enough they weren’t married to each other. Australia is many things but it’s never dull.’ ‘Well on that note I adjourn our latest team meeting,’ says Edward, looking at his watch. ‘Kiri we will miss you a great deal but both before and after your departure in Sydney I expect it to be business as usual. Let’s start our final day’s work before the madness begins.’
