They were blind to the fact that they existed not through their own merits but due to the warped form of charity the world had decided to give them. And Xu had exhausted his. Kyoshi was the only thing holding him up.

I'm pretty sure I remember Kyoshi was the first Avatar to use lighting (im not totally sure). Is that how it happened?

That was all anyone in this world did. What they saw their predecessors and teachers do. The Avatar was not the only being who was part of an unbroken chain.
