man. i have got to stop asking whether or not a book needs an extra one hundred pages. but. does this book need one hundred more pages? it could be over by now. i wonder if this is a reading preference i'm growing to have, or if every book i've been reading is just longer than it needs to be. i'm still willing to give McCarthy his space to work it out though, because it is well-written.

being that i loved the film adaptation, it's almost impossible not to enjoy the source material. the movie plays the book almost entirely straight, down to verbatim quoting. i thought this would make for a less engaging experience, but my favorite aspect of McCarthy's Blood Meridian was his ability to tell the reader exactly what would happen, and still shock and entrance them. i'm burning through the pages.
