There is sth about this author's writing style that I just don't enjoy. However, with as little progress as I have made, I've already cried, laughed and gasped at the text. I am too afraid to continue because I know I am going to be devastated by the end.

It has somewhat satisfactory ending. Kepp reading, it just gets better.
