Still not invested, but I'm committed to finish this anyhow

Halfway point and I really want to enjoy this, but it all lands as very shallow to me. The characters don't seem to have personalities or motivations that are compelling, they act more like plot devices than characters.

Some reviews said the writing is beautiful, that the story is mysterious and action-filled, but so far Songbird of the Sorrows feel like a paltry attempt compared to my recent fantasy reads.
