i think questlove has done a good job at covering the major events each year and connecting them to music. granted so much happens in such a small time that’s a really hard thing to do!
loved the comment on asking “where” art comes from, most people don’t look beyond what’s in front of them.
understanding the history of something is imperative to understanding the current “thing”.

really enjoyed the disco portion!! i still laugh at the beef between disco, hip hop, rap, and rock n roll bc they share so many elements and honestly are more alike than different.

he mentions mexican food and how one doesn’t think to understand cultural context as to what makes mexican food, mexican food; agricultural processes, technology, historical contexts, geography, economic viability, accessibility, etc etc. same idea can be connected to art, if you are not aware of the time period in which something is produced or why that piece of art has great cultural significance then you’re missing out on a large part of that art piece.
