This wasn't on my radar, I wanted to read another South Asian author after Roy but this is one of my best friends who isn't much of a reader (their heart lies more with music & film - they introduced me to "Woman Under the Influence " & "Possession " ) and my curiosity of what a perfect book would be for them won out . This was on their favorites shelf on StoryGraph, hopefully it's a 5 star for me to!

"She thought she’d incur serious punishment and even risk
dying if she took too much pleasure in life. So she protected herself from
death by living less, consuming so little of her life that she’d never run out.
This savings gave her a little security since you can’t fall farther than the ground. "

"I’d like to add by way of information about the young girl and myself,
that we live exclusively in the present because it is always eternally today
and tomorrow will be a today, eternity is the state of things at this very
moment."

"Forgive me but I’m going to keep talking about me who am unknown to
myself, and as I write I’m a bit surprised because I discover I have a
destiny. Who hasn’t ever wondered: am I a monster or is this what it means
to be a person?"

"Naturally, like every writer I’m tempted to use
succulent terms: I know splendid adjectives, meaty nouns, and verbs so
slender that they travel sharp through the air about to go into action, since
words are actions, don’t you agree? I’m not going to adorn the word
because if I touch the girl’s bread the bread will turn to gold—and the girl
(she’s nineteen) the girl wouldn’t be able to bite it, dying of hunger"

"Make no mistake, I only achieve simplicity with enormous effort.
As long as I have questions and no answers I’ll keep on writing."
