I'm amazed at how little research went into this. Like, don't get me wrong, it's a silly premise rooted in a silly thing that actually was discussed in history, but you can't set a book in the 19th century and then reference the Bureau of Land Management, an agency that didn't exist until 1947. Not even a cutesy author's note joking about the historical inaccuracy excuses such poor research.
