Pullman is still a good storyteller, but I think this book could have done with a good editor. I feel like the story moves forwards in jumps: despite everything that happens to the characters, they don't uncover the truth gradually through their adventures but out of the blue (often through a random epiphany). I don't understand what they know or how they know it - it's frustrating and confusing.
