And he remembered thinking then that if she died, he was certain he wouldn't cry. For it would be the dying of an unknown, a street face, a newspaper image, and it was suddenly so very wrong that he had begun to cry, not at death but at the thought of not crying at death, a silly empty man near a silly empty woman, while the hungry snake made her still more empty.

'Stuff your eyes with wonder, he said, live as if you'd drop dead in ten sec-onds. See the world. It's more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories. Ask no guaran-tees, ask for no security, there never was such an ani-mal. And if there were, it would be related to the Beat sloth which hangs upside down in a tree all day every day, sleeping its life away.

he knew why he must never burn again in his life.
The sun burnt every day. It burnt Time. The world rushed in a circle and turned on its axis and time was busy burning the years and the people anyway, without any help from him. So if he burnt things with the firemen and the sun burnt Time, that meant that everything burnt!

How do you get so empty? he wondered. Who takes it out of you? And that awful flower the other day, the dandelion! It had summed up everything, hadn't it? "What a shame! You're not in love with anyone!" And why not?
