Eugenie and her father are exact opposites. He is a greedy man who sells his gold at a premium when there is a shortage of gold on the market.
She throws her money (pécule nest-egg) into an ocean of affection for her ruined cousin Charles. She's blinded by love....but his betrayal is inevitable. Balzac makes me get out my box of Kleenex...so said to read how tragically naive Eugénie is!

Reading is going slowly...did not reach my targets for the last few days. I was distracted again "by the news in the world." Good news: reading Balzac is much easier than Zola or Flaubert. If you start reading French classics...always go to Balzac first!

Read 123/298 - distracted again by "the news" but finally finished 25 pages. At this rate I'll need 7 more days ...
Lovey descriptions of young, naive Eugénie... secretly falling in love with her cousin Charles.

Easy read...Balzac introduces the landscape, people, their clothes....rooms and in between we learn that Eugenie Grande is about to fall in love with a young man who her father (miser, stingy) may not like...the "Le Parisien" has debts.

Haven't even started my 50 pg a day target...and I'm frustrated! Why does Balzac refuse to create chapters ...for a flowing narrative? It does NOT enhance the storytelling...but drives me crazy!
