as a book that is steeped in metaphor and thematic doubling, this one is excellent. It’s heavy, but it’s excellent.

As if there was ever any doubt as to whether King could make the story of a person trapped on her bed post-husband compelling. The entrance of the dog added a lot of welcome tension, but the trauma that Jessie has been orbiting since the ugliness began is looming and now just below the surface, all but peeking out of the dark waters of her psyche.

Jessie fights off her husband, who is prepared to commit rape during what had started out as sex begrudgingly with handcuffs, and is now chained to the bed with a dead husband on the floor, miles away from any other human being. I know enough to know that the landscapes she will be traversing are mostly psychological, but it helps that she “talks” to herself with distinct voices.
