Nothing like a Victorian sensation novel to make you thank the lord for feminism. Fully 95% of the problems in this book would have been solved if Isabel, upon being orphaned, had "get job open bank account rent cute apartment adopt cat and casually date all these men in love with her without legal consequence should one of them suck until she falls in love" as an option!
