When people are allowed to own responsibility for decisions, they seek advice and input from others while still making considered decisions that do not comply with everyone’s opinion.

It is important to remember that participation is not the same as agreement. It is entirely possible for a group of people to move forward quite effectively, aligned around a common vision and with considerable disagreement about the most effective action.

We are not our labels or our roles, and we must learn to see each other first as a whole human being rather than objectifying the other person according to labels or to the past. It’s useful to remain curious about our own unconscious biases toward certain types of people and awake to the blind spots that are an inevitable result.
