I learned that through the early colonists period we were fighting not just Spaniards but also neighboring tribes and the United States. Although we original were split it wasn't as bad as it became, also foreigners wanted to appoint a single leader to us to fit us into their ways. I also read about the treaty of 1849 which was mainly about returning captives and US getting to make borders and control our land.

So far I learned the basics to the Navajo's early ways. From them having 2 headmen (or women) that looked after either War or Peace. These 2 also no absolute control and never used force to make others do things. The leader positions were never hereditary instead when passing of a leader or step down of one, Navajos would instead do a simple democratic selection process in favor of a replacement.
