I genuinely despise endnotes, as they force the reader out of the narrative and into an unnecessary hunt.

The historical material at the beginning of Wuthering Heights— Charlotte Brontë’s preface, biographical notes and Pauline Nestor’s discussion of critical schools—offers substantial context. While dense, this being my third reading allowed me to appreciate its value more fully, even though I initially thought it was going to be extraneous. It is nearly 50 pages (xlix).
