Halfway through, I’m intrigued by the idea that memory here is disturbed less by destruction itself than by what it leaves behind. There’s a deep irony in how an aftermath—a residue in the wake of a life force—exerts its greatest power precisely where mastery over recollection has been gained.

Part 1 done. Symbolism now feels quietly insistent—the serpent near Wiston, splitting like water around stone, and the novel’s scenic descriptions linger as more than image. Moral tensions deepen, especially between truth and deception where Edwin is concerned, and among Wiston, Gawain, and the grey-haired soldier. The narrator has withdrawn, leaving interpretation increasingly unsettled. Querig remains an enigma.

Note: this edition has 317 story pages (GR counts front/back material). The novel moves quickly so far, with brief descriptive lulls. Ishiguro’s use of an external narrator stood out immediately—his recurring concern with privacy already feels operative. Familiar themes (love’s justification, self vs. ideal, memory and amnesia) appear early, joined by a new emphasis on theology and religion—promising and unsettling.
