This book is really charming despite mostly being set in times besieged by war and famine. Love of family is at the heart of the story. The relationship between grandmother and granddaughter and all the events that have led to the current time is compelling. Although I did sometimes get confused, the family tree at the front and the time periods given at the start of the chapters helped.
