Changez initially thrives in the U.S. He has faith in pursuing a relationship with Erica, has a great job at Underwood Samson, and was ranked #1 in the firm among recruits. NYC has been great for him, saying it felt like home, and he right away became a "New Yorker". However, he says on page 4, he was happy to join the meritocracy, "at least at first". I wonder what happens to make his U.S experience unsuccessful.

Changez's reaction to 9/11 doesn't surprise me. Most were shocked when he smiled, but I understand. He had a small grudge against the US, and that's valid, he explained that he's not a sociopath. I'm on board with him. Then, Changez experiences blatant racism when security guards check him more excessively than his colleagues. I'm starting to see why his U.S experience went bad. I'm excited to see how he responds.

I realize Changez initially faced a little bit of criticism from Jim during their interview. It wasn't exactly racist, but you could tell. Changez got angry. Again, when Erica's father made rude remarks about Pakistan, Changez got angry. He is sentimental about Pakistan and loses his judgment when things are said about it. Maybe Changez can no longer deal with those comments, and that is why he returns to Pakistan!

Changez has just met Erica's parents, sees Erica often, and had a sensual moment at a picnic. Many people in my class seem to think Erica thinks about her ex Chris too much, and that she will not be good for Changez. Sure, she talks about Chris. That doesn't mean there won't be a long-term relationship. They have a great connection and great conversation. I predict Erica will not be the problem, but Changez will be.
