“Pray, pray be very careful,” he implored her.
“What nonsense! What could happen to me?”
“Where there is murder, anything can happen. I tell that to you. I, Poirot.”

“I was not clever about her—No—I, Hercule Poirot, was not clever at all.” “Hear, hear,” said Dr. Stillingfleet. “First time I’ve ever heard you say that, Poirot! Wonders will never cease!”

“There could be reasons. Rather far-fetched reasons, but not beyond the bounds of belief.”
“Really, Monsieur Poirot, you can’t suspect everybody.”
“Mais oui, that is just what I can do. I suspect everybody. First I suspect, then I look for reasons.”

“Ariadne Oliver was here last weekend. She came over with the Lorrimers. Her books are most amusing, aren’t they? But perhaps you don’t find detective stories amusing. You are a detective yourself, aren’t you—a real one?”
“I am all that there is of the most real,” said Hercule Poirot.

Mrs. Oliver thought that “naturally” was not the word at all. What was natural was that Poirot himself was sure that everyone had always heard of him. Actually large numbers of people would only look at you blankly if the name of Hercule Poirot was mentioned, especially the younger generation.

Alan, I want to do a big Agatha Christie read this year... and I don't know where to start. People on the internet usually recommend reading first the best ones, like And Then There Were None, Orient Express etc. and then just read them as they come. Do you read them in a particular order?

I am roughly doing them in chronological order, except I skipped over a dozen or so in order to finish all the Poirots first. Then I'm going to backtrack to finish all of them. I'd agree that reading the classic 'best ones' makes for the best initial impression. I would add The Murder of Roger Ackroyd to that list as it was her breakthrough novel which cemented her superstar status. My favourite of the Miss Marples is A Murder Is Announced.
