My favorite theme from the chapter was the author’s hesitancy to inject our own experiences into the empty spaces that are left in history. We see drama, mistakes, crude humor, arguments between spouses, and poems of love. She lets us fill in the gaps, while also accepting that we will never know. It made me realize how similar we are to those a thousand years ago, while also appreciating how much has changed.
