They really compressed Jim in the novel. I think Domhnall Gleeson is just so charming as him in the film I cannot imagine another. Eilis is portrayed as actively cheating. I with the time with Jim were 100 pages longer. Tony is a bit flat too. I sometimes wonder what I would have done if I hadn’t decided to marry Chris but then I would be a different person.

I was heartened by the portrayal of tony that indeed he was often quite serious and sober as he presented the life he could offer eilis and he was right that if she could promise she would come back then she could marry him. If a promise was just the same. BUT I do believe he raped her. She wanted it to stop clearly but couldn’t say it. And saw he wanted to do it again and acquiesced. Jim would never.

Tony is short. Eilis did wish he were taller! They got that right lol. One big difference is she knew him Farrell from the beginning at least by sight. He snubbed her mr Darcy style at the dance. I think the movie adaptation is perfect. When tony brings up their kids, it’s the exact moment she freaks out. And I would too. I realized when I got married that there would be no more looking.
