‘The horns of her crown loomed large in the glare of the flambeaux borne by lackeys along the parapet. In that weird light, she undulated and grew huge, blending with her shadows.’

‘Adoe stood in the dappled shadows, her newborn fawn at her side. Perhaps she had been there all along. Perhaps she had just arrived, summoned by Elora‘s cries. In any case, she came forward placidly and offered her milk to the child. When Elora had fed, the doe and her fawn vanished back into the woods.’

What … how exactly did the human baby feed on the deer’s milk? Did Willow hold her up to the teat?

Michelle I had no idea that there was a book behind that movie

Daniel Ah, yes. That time George murdered all our hopes of big budget fantasy films for decades to come with his horrid attempts at "humor".

Jeremy Barry Want to say there was a sequel trilogy. I had Shadow Moon? a couple of decades back, but never managed to read it.

The movie is behind the book, rather. It's the novellization by Wayland Drew based on the screenplay by Bob Dolman from a story by George Lucas.

Yep, Shadow Moon (Chronicles of the Shadow War, Book 1) by Chris Claremont and sequels. It's famously (not that famous) terrible. Hey, you know the character Willow, on which Willow is focused? He's the main character of the sequel trilogy also, except that his name changes completely at the start of the first book.

Do we know that this had an impact on the industry, or is that just genre fan lore?

OMG, the "humor," you are absolutely correct. The brownies were 10x worse than Jar-Jar.

I don't know that I ever saw any actual studio people quoted about it or anything, but it was certainly what people I talked too believed at the time. Of course, what everybody meant by that was a LotR style "high fantasy" movie for an adult audience, with an actual LotR
adaptation being the gold ring. ;) The "fantasy" movies we had were either kids stuff, or Conan type sword and sorcery. I think part of it was just fans wanted Tolkien style fantasy to be taken seriously as a genre, and people had hopes Willow could do for fantasy what Star Wars had done for SF (sorry pedants, SF just means rayguns and spaceships to the public). Like one big fantasy success could open the gates. But then it actually came out and the brownies were so awful even fans were cringing.

I don't know. It's too close to call!
