Dare I say it, this book is even better on my re-read as an adult. The dystopian themes have aged really well, and I understand them at a deeper level now. As a teen this book was mainly about the love story to me, but now I’m more invested in what makes a society a controlling one—what factors over time slowly take away a person’s choices. It’s fascinating, and haunting.

Things that went over my head as a 16 year old: how fucked up it is that the Society wouldn’t have allowed sex except for as reproduction, and even those who chose to be Single could only date, flirt, kiss. No birth control. Even if you were Matched, you couldn’t control if/when you would get pregnant. And everything is hetero.
Societies that limit sexual freedom are absolute evil.
