Urgh. Do all British people spend the vast majority of their time feeling embarrassed about things no one needs to worry about, and the rest of the time being guarded and careful, in order to avoid potential embarrassment in the future?! Good grief, how exhausting and self-hindering!

This book is making me nervous. I've committed almost every social faux pas mentioned here this past week alone.

Uncomfortable.

Sem Yup, but perhaps less so now. Embarrassment is to be avoided at all costs.

Capn In 1980, it seemed very central to one's existence!

Sem, you're clever - WHY is embarrassment to be avoided at all costs? And who decides what's embarrassing?!
Obviously I am missing key context somewhere.

Look at it this way. Without embarrassment there'd be no British humour because so much of it is about embarrassment. You must have seen A Fish Called Wanda. Things that are embarrassing are always funny and no one wants to be made fun of. I think it's connected to not standing out or being seen to stand out and fear of doing something inappropriate (showing that you don't fit in or know the rules) and fear of being mocked. Which, now that I think of it, is what Canadian sorry culture is all about.

Simpler answer - England is a shame culture and so is Canada. The US is a guilt culture.

They'd be even weirder without the social pressure to conform.
