I’m increasingly invested in Chava’s growth and genuinely afraid for her freedom, while Ahmad’s arrogance makes his suffering feel well-earned. The story sits tensely between control and autonomy, and I’m content to linger in that uneasy, magical in-between.

The issue here is not the story, but the author. Helene Wecker’s chaotic handling of POV and transitions disrupts pacing, muddles chronology, and actively damages character development. What should feel immersive instead feels jarring and exhausting, as the reader is left to do the structural work the author fails to provide.
She overestimates her ability, and the book suffers for it.
Humble yourself Wecker.

Mini Review (Chapter 12):
I’m halfway through The Golem and the Jinni, and I’m still more drawn to Chava than Ahmad. Her quiet strength and careful observation feel grounding, while Ahmad’s arrogance keeps me wary. I’m not sure I want to know what happens next, but I’m happy to linger in the space between stillness and magic, waiting for a secret to reveal itself.

Surprised the Jinni is male and the Golem female. I’m far more drawn to the Golem’s quiet growth and emerging free will. I don’t yet see how the Jinni fits into the story, but I’ll keep reading.
