'I most certainly will not,' she said, grateful he couldn't see the smile that belied her words.

Oh, to be admired by a shameless, kidnapping bandit; she said, dryly, and when he laughed again, it sent another burst of warmth through her that had nothing to do with the heat. 'Then again, I suppose you're not as awful as I
expected.'

'Does that mean you find me… tolerable?'

Rose could hear the smirk in his voice. 'I'd like you a lot more if you took me home,' she huffed.

'How many princesses do you know?'

He laughed, the sound rumbling through his chest and into her. It made her heart flutter in a way that was not entirely unpleasant. 'You're braver than I thought, too. Or at least you're trying to be.' His voice was close to her ear, his breath warm on her skin. Rose swallowed. I can't help but admire that.'

His face was exquisite, too. His eyes were wide and grey - the exact shade of a sea at storm, and the hard edge of his jaw was softened by the barest hint of a smile. Wren might not have noticed it at all if she hadn't been staring so hard at his lips.

Find your courage. Wield it as a weapon.

'She's certainly a prettier sleeper than you. You're a hideous drooler.'

Wren punched him in the arm.

He chewed the smile from the inside of his cheek. 'You've got more freckles. And her hair is darker than yours!'

Wren passed a hand over her braid, frowning.

'I bet she's a lot nicer.'

'I will fling you back out of that window, Shen.'
