Yes, horror can be numbed, but hope remains, like a many-headed dragon that grows a new head on its leathery shoulders for every one you hack off.

How many wrong turns must a person take in order to find the right road? How many false promises do you have to give in order to keep your word? How many times must you move to another country before you reach home? How can you change your life when you've memorized it like a poem? How many hours must I count, how many hourglasses must I empty, to return to the point when the clocks still told the right time?

When a beloved person goes, they leave behind an awful, jagged crater--and you can never grant anyone a glimpse into your abyss, never let them see the extent of the damage.

The more reverence&respect the state lost; the more clearly its citizens saw liars, exploiters,&manipulators working for the Father State; the more obviously its ideology mutated into farce; the more citizens lost their most enduring connection to the state, namely fear--the more unstoppably the 'thieves' code' infiltrated mainstream society. Even my grandmothers regarded ppl who cooperated w/the militsiya as 'rats'.

Until I met Dina, I just wanted to get through life. I didn't want to get burned, I didn't want to hope or want too much, I didn't want to scale any heights, because fear was always breathing down my neck. And when I dreamed--which I did, frequently and feverishly--it was always in the knowledge that these were just dreams, not really there to be fulfilled.

Because life should make concessions to a person who is prepared to celebrate it every day; it should dance with them, their whole life long. But as is so often the case, life didn't care what expectations we had of it.
