There's a saying that society loves no one more than a pregnant woman. I'd argue the reverse is also true - no one is more reviled than a pregnant woman who doesn't want to be pregnant. Ernaux captures this sense of exile and loneliness so viscerally.

Ernaux's Jean T. is the perfect example of a performative male activist. He claims he cares about women's autonomy, but is sexually titillated by the narrator's unwanted pregnancy. The second his postpartum wife is out of the house, he attempts to sexually assault the protagonist.
